# State Of The Market

## General information

Bitcoin donations began back in 2017, when an anonymous donor donated 5,104 bitcoins to launch the Pineapple Foundation. The foundation has donated more than $55 million in bitcoin donations to 60 charities. They are now valued at more than $200 million.

As of 2022, nearly all charities are accepting bitcoin donations, and the number of bitcoin charitable donations is growing. Giving block analysis shows that cryptocurrency donations have increased from $4.2 million in 2020 to $69.6 million in 2021. Over the same period, cryptocurrency donations increased by 1.558%, or nearly 16 times. In addition, the average amount donated to cryptocurrency increased 236% from an average of $3.109, 2020 in $10.445 to 2021.<br>

[Freedom of the Press Foundation:](https://freedom.press/donate/cryptocurrency/) “The organization works to preserve and strengthen First and Fourth Amendment rights guaranteed to the press through a variety of avenues, including the development of encryption tools, documentation of attacks on the press, training newsrooms on digital security practices, and advocating for the public’s right to know.”  Accepts: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, and ZCash.

[GiveCrypto.org:](https://www.givecrypto.org/) In 2018, Coinbase co-founder Brian Armstrong founded GiveCrypto, a nonprofit that distributes cryptocurrency to people living in poverty. GiveCrypto has distributed over $300k of cryptocurrency to over 5,000 people in 13 different countries.  Accepts: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, Litecoin, and USDC via Coinbase Commerce.
